Can I get a grant for a stairlift in North London?
Not through us. The suppliers we work with sell and fit privately, so they do not take on grant-funded installations. Disabled Facilities Grants are run by your local council, which arranges the installer itself, so apply to the council directly rather than starting here.
Can other people still use the stairs?
Yes. The rail sits to one side of the treads, and the seat, footrest and arms fold up when the lift is not in use, so the staircase stays usable. On a narrow staircase, ask the supplier to confirm the clearance left once the seat is folded.
Does a stairlift need special wiring?
Usually not. Most domestic stairlifts run from a standard household socket near the top or bottom of the stairs, and most charge a battery so the lift still works in a power cut. If there is no socket within reach, the supplier will tell you at the free home survey.
Will fitting a stairlift damage my staircase?
The rail fixes to the treads of the stairs rather than to the wall, so there are screw holes in the treads once it comes out. It is not structural work and it does not need building or planning permission in a private home. Ask whether making good is included if the lift is later removed.
Can a stairlift be removed later?
Yes, and it is worth agreeing the terms before you buy rather than afterwards. Ask whether removal is included, what it costs if not, and whether the supplier will buy the lift back. We also list used lifts for sale if you are disposing of one.
