    How to compare stairlift models

    Guide last reviewed:

The best stairlift for you depends on your staircase first and the person using it second. Check whether your stairs are straight or curved, then compare models on maximum user weight, seat type, warranty and fitting time before asking for prices.

    Straight or curved?

If your staircase runs in one straight line with no landings or bends, a straight stairlift will fit. Stairs that turn, have a half landing or a fanned bend need a curved stairlift with a made-to-measure rail.

What to check on each model

Look at the maximum user weight, whether the seat swivels at the top, whether it suits a narrow staircase, the length of the warranty and whether next-day fitting is available.

    Getting an accurate price

Guide prices give you a starting point, but the final price depends on your stairs. A free survey gives you a fixed written quote, and comparing more than one helps you get a fair price.

    Stairlift questions answered

How much does a stairlift cost in the UK?

Our guide prices start from around £2,250 for a straight stairlift, while curved stairlifts usually cost between £3,500 and £6,000. Your final price depends on your staircase, the model you choose and any extras, so it is worth comparing written quotes from more than one installer.

What is the difference between a straight and a curved stairlift?

A straight stairlift runs on a standard rail along a staircase with no bends or landings, so it can often be fitted quickly. A curved stairlift has a rail made to measure for your staircase, which is needed if your stairs turn, have a landing or a fanned bend. The made-to-measure rail is why curved stairlifts cost more.

How do I choose the right stairlift model?

Start with your staircase type, then compare the features that matter for the person using it: the maximum user weight, whether the seat swivels, whether it suits a narrow staircase, the length of the warranty and how quickly it can be fitted. Each model above lists these so you can compare them side by side.

How long does it take to fit a stairlift?

Straight stairlifts can often be fitted within days, and some models offer next-day fitting. Curved stairlifts take longer because the rail is made to measure for your stairs, so allow a few weeks from the survey to installation.

Is it free to compare stairlift prices here?

Yes. Comparing stairlift models and requesting prices through Stair Lift Comparison is free, and there is no obligation to buy.

    Are the stairlift companies vetted?

Yes. Before an installer receives enquiries through us, we check three things: that they hold relevant insurance, that they have the appropriate governing body approval, and that they provide warranty cover.
