A domestic stairlift is a mechanical devise which can be used to transport the user up and down the stairs, by sitting in the lifts chair and operating the device. The chair runs on a track which is usually fitted to the stairs steps by metal brackets. Most modern ones are operated by a simple control on the chair, and also may have a remote control so the chair can be called by the user.
They are an ideal solution if the user has difficulties climbing or descending the stairs in their home. The user simply sits in the chair and by using the control descends or ascends the stairs and exits when either at the top or bottom of the stairs.
Modern domestic stairlifts can be fitted to most staircases including those which are curved. However, fitting to a curved staircase will be more costly than a simple straight staircase as the track will have to be custom made.
The stair lifts run of battery power. The battery is recharged when the lift is not being used. The benefits of this being that then are no unsightly cables running up and down the stairs, and also in the event of a power cut the lift can still be used for a short while.
There are many manufacturers of stairlifts which gives the user plenty of choice to ensure they purchase a suitable product. Some of the main manufacturers include suppliers such as Acorn, Stannah, Brooks and Companion.
