OFT puts spotlight on mobility aids, stairlifts and adjustable beds distributors

14/02/2012
The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has issued a warning and taken due action against UK mobility aid traders dealing in stairlifts, power chairs, adjustable beds and other mobility aids. Concerns were raised on the sale of mobility aids and adjustable beds to pensioners and disabled people and it has cancelled the license of two individuals. While another few mobility aid companies have come under investigations. Spokesman for OFT said: “We had received hundreds of complaints last year about the mobility aid sales including stairlifts, mobility scooter, adjustable beds and riser recliners from different consumers. In the complaints which ranged from the products not being delivered or were overpriced, we found that some were even scammed. There are specific guidelines for traders on how to sell once they enter a customer’s home.” “Adjustable beds and recliners are usually used at home by the elderly and disabled but their demand has risen considerably.” OFT Director, David Fisher said: “Warnings have been issued to traders that they are not allowed to use any pressure tactics, aggressive sales techniques and illegal or unfair business means to sell their products. All of the companies need to have the credit license and in case of any complaints, we look into it and investigate.” The consumer license of ABM Mobility owners, Ranjit Dhami and Amarjit Gill have been revoked after the way mobility aids and adjustable beds were sold by them. OFT declared that they have breached the legislations for consumer protection by utilizing aggressive sales tactics even though in the past Derbyshire Trading Standards had issued warnings. Although Ranjit Dhami had a separate license she was debarred due to the close association with Mr. Gill’s business.
