Fundraiser planned for disabled daughter’s stairlift
17/01/2012
A fundraiser has been organized by a Wirral couple with the hope of funding a stairlift and wheelchair for their severely disabled 11-year old daughter, Aleks. Nicoll Baker and her partner, Steve are hoping to raise £20,000 to pay for a specially adapted wheelchair and stairlift which will make the life of their daughter easier as she grows up.
Aleks suffers from Rett Syndrome, a genetic disorder that renders her incapable of feeding, speech and mobility. Eastham based, Nicoll said: “She is completely dependant on us for all her personal and social requirements but as she is growing, it is becoming very difficult for us to lift and carry her around. A stairlift would make a lot of difference in her life.”
Launching a fundraising drive, the patents are hoping that there is good response for the forthcoming event. On 28th January is a soul night in Bromborough to help with the campaign.
Aleks was diagnosed at 2 years and completely relie son her parents for everyday needs. Her parents are hoping that the stairlift and wheelchair will ease off some of the mobility requirements to ensure that the whole family has a little easier time in looking after her. Steve and Nicoll said: “Though one of us is there for her all the time, she is getting bigger and it has become very difficult to carry her around all the time.”
“Our fundraiser is aimed to raise the money that we need for her stairlift and specially adapted wheelchair as it will make a massive difference in her life and will make it easier for us. Basically, it has come to a point where our lifting her has become dangerous for me and for her, as I fear she might fall.”
“Negotiating the stairs is extremely tiring and risky and using a stairlift can solve that problem while putting her in the specially adapted wheelchair can ensure that she is safe and mobile.”
